NWC & Wrestling FAQs
At the beginning of each season, a NWC Board member will meet with parents to present Wrestling 101 and answer any questions they have about the sport or the club. Some helpful tips appear below.
- What should I expect at beginners' tournaments?
- Beginners' tournaments are on Sunday afternoons.
- Before the meet begins, all wrestlers will have skin checks which include:
- Verification of the wrestler's AAU card (take a picture of it with your phone in case you lose the actual piece of paper)
- Assessing the skin for infection and wounds
- Checking nails for length and rough or sharp edges (keep nail clippers in your wrestler's bag).
- Most beginner tournaments DO NOT have weigh-ins.
- Expect up to 4 matches in a Round Robin tournament.
- Most wrestlers at these tournaments have 0-2 years of experience.
- At a beginner tournament, referees will be more instructional with their calls than at an experienced tournament.
- What should I expect at experienced tournaments?
- Experienced tournaments are on Saturdays and have a morning session for tots, bantams, and juniors and an afternoon session for midgets and middle schoolers.
- Before each session begins (and sometimes on the evening before the tournament), all wrestlers will have weigh-ins and skin checks. This includes:
- Verification of the wrestler's AAU card (take a picture of it with your phone in case you lose the actual piece of paper)
- Verifying the wrestler's weight (wrestlers should wear their uniform). There will be a 1lb weight allowance for the uniform.
- Assessing the skin for infection and wounds
- Checking nails for length and rough or sharp edges (keep nail clippers in your wrestler's bag).
- How are the wrestlers split into groups?
For the 2022-2023 season,...
- Tots are children born in 2017 or after.
- Bantams are children born in 2016 or 2015.
- Midgets are children born in 2014 or 2013.
- Juniors are children born in 2012 or 2011.
- Middle schoolers are children born in 2010, 2009, or 2008 but no 9th graders per the TN Team handbook.
